Local Tips for Visiting Berlin
After years of welcoming guests to Berlin, we've collected the insider knowledge that makes the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one. Here are our top local tips.
Buy a 7-Day Transport Pass
MoneyIf you're staying a week or more, the BVG 7-day ticket (Wochenkarte, around €36) is far cheaper than daily tickets. Buy it at any U-Bahn station or the BVG app.
Cash is King
MoneyMany Berlin restaurants, bars, and smaller shops are cash-only. Always carry some euros — there are ATMs (Geldautomaten) at every U-Bahn station.
Explore Beyond Mitte
ExplorationPrenzlauer Berg, Neukölln, and Schöneberg offer authentic neighbourhood life away from tourist crowds. Take the U-Bahn one stop further and discover a different Berlin.
Sunday is Quiet
LifestyleMost shops close on Sundays in Germany. Stock up on groceries on Saturday, or head to a market like Mauerpark Flea Market or Markthalle Neun for Sunday provisions.
Museums on the First Sunday
BudgetState museums on Museum Island (and many others) offer free admission on the first Sunday of each month. Arrive early — these get very busy.
Pfand — Return Your Bottles
LifestyleBottles and cans have a deposit (Pfand) of 8–25 cents. Return them at any supermarket's Rückgabeautomat to get your money back — it's completely normal and expected.
Speak a Little German
CultureBerliners speak excellent English, but a simple "Guten Tag" (good day) or "Danke" (thank you) goes a long way. Locals genuinely appreciate the effort.
